Change in a Changing World, an apt title for our time, with climate change no longer something we can ignore, things they really are a’changing, the question is, how are we going to adapt?
Today’s keynote addresses from Duncan Faulkener, JBA and Will McBain, Arup, at the TUFLOW UK/Europe User Conference 2021, sought to address that very question. As Duncan said, “once upon a time climate change was something that we expected to impact our future. Now we are living in that future. How does it compare with our expectations?”
Will McBain gave a thought stimulating presentation about the crucial role of the modeller in formulating solutions that improve the long-term resilience of both society and the environment. Will’s statement “we are effectively on a war footing tackling the environmental crisis” really presses home the urgency of finding ways to improve that resiliance.
Of course TUFLOW is a valuable part of the modellers toolbox and our TUFLOW Conference would not be complete without Bill Syme, TUFLOW, who joined the conference from Brisbane Australia with a fascinating presentation about the changing nature of hydraulic modelling and the advancements in solvers technology.
Day one was a success, we had other great speakers, and even some technical problems but we adapted and it was generally felt that it was good to be part of the world again, meeting old faces and new.
