Sam Jones

Hydraulic Modeller

Sam earned a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cardiff University, taking a particular interest in environmental sciences and hydraulics. He wrote his dissertation on Natural Flood Management in an ungauged catchment, which allowed him to gain his first experience of hydraulic modelling.

Sam joined Edenvale Young in the summer of 2020 and has been building on his technical knowledge, predominantly involving creating 1D-2D linked models using TUFLOW and ESTRY for a diverse range of projects and clients. Alongside this he has also been developing his civil engineering knowledge, working on design projects for emergency flooding works and fish passes, as well as detailed bridge calculations to Eurocode standard.

Some of Sam's key skills

Expertise

  • Building 1D-2D linked models using TUFLOW-ESTRY to accurately represent both river channels and floodplains.
  • Proficient use of Flood Modeller Pro in order to model rivers in 1D, alongside 2D modelling in TUFLOW.
  • Post-processing of results in order to analyse modelling results and convey information to clients.
  • Creation of fully distributed catchment scale rainfall models in order to capture hydrological response of river basins to various storm events and subsequent hydraulic activity.
  • Undertaking of detailed flood risk assessments, utilising both desktop study and hydraulic modelling to assess flood risk to a site and derive adequate mitigation options.
  • Assessment of Natural Flood Management optioneering processes and creation of catchment-wide benefit mapping to inform decision making.
  • Use of CAD in order to edit and create detailed design solutions for small-scale projects such as fish passes.
  • Providing training modules to newer members of staff.
