Hydrological analysis typically involves the derivation of rainfall and flow estimates. This is integral to assessing flood risk and understanding the likely extent of flooding during high flow events as well as hydraulic structural design and drainage design. We use this information to help our clients make better-informed decisions and appropriately mitigate flood risk.

Our team of hydrologists can undertake analyses using UK-standard and international methods. Their work utilises a range of environmental and hydrometric datasets and, combined with a comprehensive understanding of catchment processes and UK approved methods/software, they provide the inputs which underpin our hydraulic modelling.

Our Expertise

Our Hydrological Services

Our hydrological services include:

  • Design high flow estimation using the UK’s FEH methods
  • Bespoke statistical hydrology from gauge data (international)
  • Low flow estimation
  • River gauge rating and rating review
  • Rainfall event rarity analysis
  • Joint probability analysis
  • Calibration of hydrological models to observed events
  • Direct Rainfall Hydrology

Whilst a hydrological analysis can be undertaken as a stand-alone assessment, it is often the case that we couple this work with hydraulic modelling. Edenvale Young have the ability to undertake both hydrology and modelling in-house. This means that we adopt an integrated approach, sharing data and information across both disciplines and ultimately optimising outcomes for our clients.

Edenvale Young also have experience in bespoke hydrological methods, please contact us for further details or to discuss your requirements.

Low Flow Hydrology

Edenvale Young are increasingly involved in the analysis of daily flow data, often referred to as “low-flow” to distinguish it from the flood events that are the more common focus of hydrological analysis. Daily flows are day-to-day river flows seen outside of flood conditions. They help us understand the watercourse during normal and low-flow periods, including periods of extended dry weather. We assess daily flows for a range of purposes, including the optimisation of hydraulic structures, fish passage design and environmental flow management. We are experienced in making use of local gauge data where available. In the absence of an existing gauge, we have worked with clients to install bespoke hydrometric monitoring equipment at their site, with this data feeding into any subsequent analysis. Alternatively, we can apply industry standard software to derive low flow estimates at a given location.

A low flow analysis can be undertaken as a stand-alone activity but will most often form the input to a hydraulic model.
