Gavenny Weir is situated at the site of an old mill towards the South of Abergavenny; approximately 200 m upstream of the confluence of the River Gavenny with the River Usk. The aim of the scheme is to lower the weir to a height such that it no longer presents a barrier to the upstream migration of Salmonids. The scheme represents a step towards meeting the objectives of the Water Framework Directive, a legislative driver for improving the ecological status of water bodies across the European Community. Currently the status of the River Gavenny is classified as moderate and there is a key action to improve habitats within the Usk catchment as a whole.
Edenvale Young were commissioned by the Wye & Usk Foundation to produce detailed design drawings for a proposed scheme to lower a section of an existing weir on the River Gavenny.
